  • Nottinghamshire mother flies out for death trial

The Nottinghamshire mother of an 11-year-old girl, drowned after being trapped in a harness underneath a capsized catamaran two years’ ago, is returning to Greece on September 18 to attend the trial of three men and a woman on charges related to her daughter’s death.

Laura Morgan died on July 31, 2003, while on a two-week holiday with her mother Lynne and older sister Sarah at Club Vounaki, an all-inclusive watersports club run by Sunsail,  near Paleros, on the island of Lefkada in Western Greece.

The case will be heard by the Court of Misdemeanours in Lefkada Town, beginning on September 20, and Lynne is flying out two days before.

An inquest into Laura’s death was opened by Nottingham Coroner Nigel Chapman and adjourned, pending investigations.    British police have since compiled their own dossier, including witness statements, and the Crown Prosecution Service in Nottingham has been in contact with the Greek investigating authorities.

Lynne and Laura’s father, Graham, who were divorced shortly before the tragedy, are determined that Laura’s spirit should live on.  They have set up The Laura Rose Memorial Trust to support needy children across the world.

Earlier this year, a memorial hockey trophy bearing Laura’s name was presented at Nottingham Girls’ High School, where she was a pupil; and on September 14 -- four days before Lynne flies out to Greece -- a commemorative seat is being dedicated in the school’s new wildlife garden.

Lynne is flying from Gatwick to Preveza (Greece) on September 18, and is booked into the Hotel Konaki, Ligia ( four kilometres from Lefkada Town where the trial is being held) until her return to the UK on Oct 3.  ( Laura’s 14th Birthday)

The Laura Rose Memorial Trust is a registered charity whose objectives are to advance the education of children and to relieve conditions of need, hardship or distress (in any part of the world without reference to race, creed or nationality); and to make donations and payment to other charities with similar objectives.
