Nottinghamshire mother flies out a second time for death trial

The Nottinghamshire mother of an 11-year-old girl, drowned after being trapped in a harness underneath a capsized catamaran two-and-a-half years’ ago, is returning to Greece on March 18 to give evidence at the trial of five people on charges relating to her daughter’s death.

Laura Morgan died on July 31, 2003, while on a two-week holiday with her mother Lynne and older sister Sarah at Club Vounaki, an all-inclusive watersports club run by Sunsail,  at Paleros on the mainland of Western Greece.

The case will be heard by the Court of Misdemeanours in Lefkada Town, on the island of Lefkada, beginning on March 21, and Lynne is flying out three days before.

The trial was due to be held last September, but was postponed a few minutes after the hearing began because one of the summonses had not been served. It is now understood that all 5 defendants will have legal representation at the trial.

An inquest into Laura’s death has been opened by Nottingham Coroner Nigel Chapman and adjourned, pending investigations.    British police have since compiled their own dossier, including witness statements, and the Crown Prosecution Service in Nottingham has been in contact with the Greek investigating authorities.

Lynne and Laura’s father, Graham, who were divorced shortly before the tragedy, are determined that Laura’s spirit should live on.  They have set up The Laura Rose Memorial Trust to support needy children across the world.
